What is Privigen?

Privigen is an intravenous Ig therapy that contains antibodies—essential proteins in your immune system that identify and destroy bacteria and viruses that cause disease. The primary antibody found in Privigen, immunoglobulin G, is the main type of antibody made by your immune system.

Your doctor may refer to your Privigen treatment as "Ig," "intravenous Ig," or "IVIg."

What is chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)?

Chronic ITP is a bleeding disorder lasting longer than 12 months from diagnosis. It is caused by low platelet counts due to destruction or inadequate production that often causes purple bruises on the skin.

ITP symptoms can include:

  • Nosebleeds
  • Bleeding of the gums
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Tiny red dots under the skin (petechiae)

According to the American Society of Hematology, there are 3 types of ITP:

Three types of ITP

Newly Diagnosed lasts up to 3 months from diagnosis

Persistent lasts 3–12 months from diagnosis

Chronic lasts more than 12 months from diagnosis

Privigen is indicated for the treatment of chronic ITP. At the time of the Privigen pivotal trial, chronic ITP was defined as lasting 6 months or longer, and the disease criteria for that study population followed the earlier (>6 months) definition of chronic ITP.
